Akasa Kusum
"Akasa Kusum Review"
2013-06-19

I have noticed that every time I’ve watched a film by Prasanna Vithanage, it has made me think. For days afterward I would randomly remember something from the film, I’d research to understand certain parts of it that I did not fully comprehend. For an example, after watching Ira Madiyama, I attended lectures and discussions about it, read reviews and related articles (and went through a post-modernist phase as a result!) because there was much to think about and digest.

Akasa Kusum had the same effect on me, albeit with a slight difference. While Vithanage has been consistent in making another thought provoking film, this time around my ponderings have been on a more personal level than before and more short lived. Outlining an accurate cinema database - let alone a website - means a challenge in our industry. Isura Wickramaarachhi, who heads his web designing company called Isandi creations (Pvt) Ltd., has taken that extra step by creating www.films.lk. The website, with its unique domain, contains a good deal of information about past films starting from Kadavunu Poronduwa in 1947 to the latest Akasa Kusum in 2009.

"It was no easy job. I had to dig out almost all archives to find information." Isura said.

The website is done good and proper, one will notice, but still more information should be pumped in. It badly requires a complete cinema database, a luxury. Nuwan Nayanajith has authored the so far unbeaten nearly-perfect database called Sri Lankeya Cinema Vansaya. The book, now out of print, contains films up to 2004 with cast and credit details.
